Mathematics.  A Foundation in Society.

One of the keys to success, especially in math, is doing homework.  Years of our lives are spent inside the school and workplace, but the key to mastering the basics is constant practice, and that is the purpose of homework.  It provides an easily accessible means of constant repetition of a certain formula or way of thinking.  Solving quadratic systems of equations as pictured can be a daunting task without practice.  However, the practice given by homework is what allows easy memorization of the steps to solve a system.

Mathematics is one of the prime examples where homework is essential to the class.  The ability of one to perform in a certain area never increases without practice.  That is true for many things beyond the field of mathematics.  Homework is the base from which students derive their memory of how and why to do things.
